How to Physically Prepare for Mt. Kailash Mansarovar Tour
Proper physical preparation is essential for a safe and fulfilling
Kailash
Mansarovar Yatra. The journey involves long walking hours at
high altitude, cold weather, and limited medical facilities. Preparing your
body and mind in advance will significantly improve your endurance, comfort,
and overall experience.
Hiking
Preparation: Build Endurance & Strength
Much of the Mt. Kailash trek requires walking 8–15 km per
day over rugged, high-altitude terrain. Strong cardiovascular
fitness and leg strength are crucial.
Recommended Training Plan
·
Start 8–12 weeks before the tour for best
results.
·
Weekly hikes: Begin with short hikes (2–3 hours) and gradually increase
distance and difficulty. Include uphill walking whenever possible.
·
Stair climbing: Practice climbing stairs or steep slopes to simulate mountain
conditions.
·
Daily walks: Walk 5–10 km daily to condition your feet and build
stamina.
·
Strength training (2–3 times per week):
o Legs: Squats, lunges, step-ups
o Core: Planks, crunches
o Back: Rows, light deadlifts
Pro Tip: Train with the same backpack and gear you plan to carry during
the trek to help your body adapt to weight and pressure.
Yoga:
Improve Flexibility, Strength & Inner Calm
Yoga supports both the physical and mental demands of the Kailash Yatra.
It improves balance, flexibility, breathing efficiency, and mental
focus—especially helpful at high altitude.
Recommended Yoga Asanas
·
Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Improves posture and stability
·
Vrikshasana (Tree Pose): Enhances balance and leg strength
·
Trikonasana (Triangle Pose): Stretches
and tones muscles
·
Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose): Opens the chest and boosts lung
capacity
·
Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose): Strengthens
the back and legs
Practice Schedule:
·
30 minutes per session
·
4–5 times per week
·
Join a guided class or follow routines focused on trekking or
altitude adaptation
Breathing
Exercises (Pranayama): Acclimatize to High Altitude
At high altitude, thinner air and reduced oxygen can cause
fatigue, headaches, or altitude sickness. Pranayama improves
lung capacity and oxygen efficiency, helping your body acclimatize.
Recommended Breathing Techniques
·
Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing): Balances
energy and calms the mind
·
Bhastrika (Bellows Breath): Strengthens lungs and increases
oxygen intake
·
Kapalbhati (Cleansing Breath): Energizes
and clears the respiratory system
·
Deep Diaphragmatic Breathing: Trains lungs
for slow, deep breaths
Routine:
·
Start with 10 minutes daily
·
Gradually increase to 30 minutes
·
Practice on an empty stomach in a calm, quiet environment
Bonus
Preparation Tips
·
Hydration Training: Practice drinking 3–4 liters of water daily
·
Sleep Discipline: Maintain a regular sleep routine to support recovery
·
Diet: Prefer light, high-carbohydrate meals for sustained energy
·
Altitude Exposure: If possible, complete at least one high-altitude trek before the
Yatra
π
A well-prepared body and calm
mind are the keys to experiencing the divine journey of Mount Kailash with
strength, safety, and serenity.
